Our Opinion of The Fort Printers

The Fort Printers occupies an 18th century mansion in the heart of Galle Fort, recently renovated into a private hotel with just 13 suites. It is one of the most exclusive addresses in Galle, and the building’s history as a printing press adds a nice layer of character.

The rooms are divided by a playful boarding school theme, with categories called Arts, History, Geography and The Prefect’s. Each has its own personality, and the heritage furnishings including antique baths and copper-clad showers give them a genuine sense of place. The outdoor swimming pool is a welcome feature in the fort, and the restaurant makes the most of the coastal location with fresh seafood and sublime cooking.

Galle itself needs no introduction: a world heritage site, the largest remaining European-built fortress in Asia, full of history, galleries, boutiques and atmospheric streets. From the hotel you can step straight into it all, from the ramparts to the museums.

Best for culture-minded couples and solo travellers who want to stay inside the fort walls in genuine style. The school-themed rooms add a sense of fun that stops it feeling too formal. Not ideal for families or those who want a beach resort, but for a Galle Fort stay with personality and elegance, The Fort Printers is a fine choice.
