Uga Ulagalla, Sri Lanka

Our Opinion of Uga Ulagalla
Uga Ulagalla resort certainly offers a touch of class and sophistication within its varied landscape setting including gardens, tropical woodland, and paddy fields. The beautiful 50m swimming pool is very enticing, and ideal for those wishing to get their laps in! The extremely spacious villas, all with private pools, offer privacy and seclusion. All villas have their own bicycles too and we found this a very enjoyable way to explore the 58-acre site.
The location is ideal for visiting Anuradhapura and other cultural sites further afield. Over the past few years, the resort has developed its own elephant research centre which is well worth a visit. Elephant sightings are carefully noted, and time is spent working and engaging with local communities on a variety of projects which educate and help them live and work alongside these native, wild animals.

Set in the heart of the Cultural Triangle, Uga Ulagalla stands surrounded by 58 acres of natural woodland, with a 150-year-old mansion at its heart. This award-winning hotel is nestled among two sparkling reservoirs, paddy fields, and lily ponds, and was once the ancestral estate of Anuradhapura nobility.
The hotel grounds can be navigated by the bicycles or buggies, and guests can relax by the Olympic-size swimming pool, book a treatment in the luxury spa or choose to read one of the array of books provided in the library.
Ulagalla’s Liyawela restaurant is a true culinary adventure, using fresh produce to create authentic dishes. The cocktail bar is ideal to lounge and wind down from a busy day, or guests can indulge in some wine from the underground wine cellar.
Signature dining is also available, including the Kamatha, a dining experience offered at a rice paddy dining pavilion and serving traditional dishes cooked in an age-old fashion. In-villa dining is available, as are picnics and other private dining experiences at different locations on the hotel grounds.
During your stay, take nature walks, journey to Nachchaduwa, cycle through villages, go kayaking, learn to cook Sri Lankan food, and test your skills at archery or horse riding. Make sure to visit Uga's Elephant Research Centre, where the resident naturalists conduct extensive research and engage in activities to protect elephants and also safeguard the neighbouring villages.
