Our Opinion of Uga Halloowella

Uga Halloowella is tucked away in the quiet hills of Hatton, overlooking the Castlereagh Reservoir, and it is hard to imagine a more peaceful setting in Sri Lanka’s tea country. The estate dates back to 1880, once owned by Major Elton Lane, a World War I fighter pilot, and the colonial bungalow has been beautifully restored by Uga. It is accessible by helicopter or a scenic road journey, and surrounding tea estates stretch in every direction.

The bungalow has just six elegant suites, ranging from 400 to 800 square feet, each with a four-poster bed and a living area that opens onto the expansive lawn. The bathrooms are generous, with walk-in showers and double vanities, and the Lane and Pekoe Suites also offer freestanding claw-foot bathtubs. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, with cuisine that draws on the vibrant local flavours as well as high-level international dishes.

The atmosphere is one of complete calm. The lawn leads down toward the reservoir, and the views across the water to the surrounding hills are the kind that make you want to sit and stare for hours. Tea plantation walks, factory visits and the broader Hatton area are all right on the doorstep.

Best for couples seeking a romantic hill country hideaway and for anyone who appreciates restored colonial charm in a genuinely remote setting. Not for those who need nightlife or extensive facilities, but for a serene tea country escape with real character and history, Uga Halloowella is a gem.
