The Hazendal

Our Opinion of The Hazendal
Located just 30 minutes from Cape Town, The Hazendal Estate is a compelling fusion of contemporary luxury and historical charm in South Africa's renowned Stellenbosch wine region. On the edge of suburbia, the approach offers lovely views across the golf course to the surrounding hills, although the presence of power lines and pylons is a slight distraction. Nonetheless, the estate itself more than makes up for it.
The sprawling property artfully combines sleek, modern architecture with the timeless elegance of its 18th-century Cape Dutch heritage, most notably showcased in the meticulously restored, 5-bedroom 1790 Homestead. This blend of past and present defines The Hazendal’s character, offering visitors a multifaceted experience that seamlessly incorporates hospitality, wine, arts, culture, and recreation.
The Hazendal's boutique hotel is a contemporary haven, centred around a striking pool area. Spacious, well-appointed rooms feature modern, art-filled interiors, with the entry-level rooms offering pool views and the higher-tier suites looking out over a tranquil lake and rolling hills. The facilities are first-class: a serene spa, a well-equipped gym, and inviting common areas like reading and screening rooms.
The bar and terrace overlooking the golf course are standout features, while the adjacent cigar and whisky lounge adds a touch of sophistication. For dining, guests can choose from refined dishes at the main restaurant, casual bites at the Eatery and Deli, or a more immersive experience in the wine tasting lounge. The underground wine library’s ‘sensory food and wine pairing’ is an absolute highlight and comes highly recommended.
A dedication to the arts and culture lies at the heart of The Hazendal. The Marvol Gallery anchors this passion, but fascinating paintings and sculptures are found throughout the property. Regular events celebrating music, art, and more enrich the estate’s vibrant atmosphere. Car enthusiasts will appreciate the impressive classic car collection, while families will be captivated by Wonderdal, a cutting-edge interactive edutainment centre for children aged 5-13 – arguably one of the best we’ve seen in our travels.
Golf lovers are equally well-catered for, with top-notch facilities, including a beautifully maintained 18-hole par-3 course, a 27-hole putting park, and a state-of-the-art practice and coaching area, 'The Burrow'.
The Hazendal is a superb choice for active families exploring the Western Cape winelands and beyond. Its mix of modern comforts, historical charm, and diverse activities ensures a memorable stay. However, it’s worth noting that the estate is a popular venue for private events, which can limit access to certain facilities for hotel guests.
