Birkenhead House
Our Opinion of Birkenhead House
Perched on the cliffs above Walker Bay, Birkenhead House is one of those rare hotels where the view alone justifies the journey. This is South Africa's whale-watching coastline at its most dramatic, and the hotel makes the most of its position with rooms and terraces that look directly out over the water. During the winter months, Southern Right and Humpback whales come so close to the shore you can watch them breach from breakfast. The rest of the year, it is surfers carving the waves below.
The food is a genuine highlight. The kitchen blends modern African flavours with Cape seafood, French technique, and touches of Asian and Italian influence. You can eat at a table overlooking the ocean, next to the dual-level pool, in the glass-fronted dining area, or in the privacy of your room. All meals and house beverages are included, which gives the whole stay a relaxed, unhurried feel. There is a spa with three treatment rooms, a properly equipped gym, and a small boutique stocked with local art, clothing and jewellery.
Birkenhead House is best suited to couples and solo travellers who want a coastal escape with excellent food, a lively marine backdrop, and easy access to Hermanus. The complimentary shuttle into town makes it simple to explore the restaurants and galleries without needing a car. It is less ideal for families with younger children, who may find the clifftop setting restrictive.
A confident, well-run hotel in one of the best positions on the Cape coast. For whale season especially, it is hard to beat.
