Our Opinion of Mateya Safari Lodge

Mateya Safari Lodge sits in the Madikwe Game Reserve, a 75,000-hectare sanctuary in South Africa's north west that has quietly built a reputation as one of the country's finest malaria-free safari destinations. Madikwe offers the Super 7: lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, cheetah, both black and white rhino, and the endangered African wild dog, along with over 350 bird species. For travellers who want serious game viewing without the fuss of malaria prophylaxis, this is a compelling choice.

The lodge itself is deliberately small, with just five individually designed suites, each featuring hand-crafted mahogany furnishings, air conditioning, a fireplace for those cooler winter nights, and an en-suite bathroom with a secluded open-air shower that is one of the highlights of the room. The private deck with its rim-flow pool looks out over the reserve, and the effect is genuinely immersive: you are in the bush, not looking at it from behind glass. The main lodge houses a fine collection of African art, a small gym and a spa offering full body relaxation therapies.

Game drives are conducted in custom-built 4x4 vehicles with a maximum of four guests, which makes for a far more personal experience than the crowded vehicles you sometimes find elsewhere. Guided walking safaris are also available for those who want to track on foot, and the rhino conservation experience offers a chance to get involved with meaningful work on the ground. The guides and trackers here are experienced and attuned to the reserve's rhythms, which makes all the difference.

Mateya is an excellent fit for couples, solo travellers, and small groups who value exclusivity and a quiet, unhurried pace. The malaria-free location, small size and high guiding standards make it especially appealing for first-time safari-goers who want the real thing without the concerns that sometimes come with it.
