Fancourt Hotel
Our Opinion of Fancourt Hotel
Fancourt is something of a legend among South African resorts, and once you arrive it is easy to see why. Set on 613 hectares of lush Garden Route countryside with the Outeniqua Mountains as a dramatic backdrop, this is a proper destination estate rather than just a hotel. It sits conveniently close to George Airport (about seven kilometres) and the town of George, so you are not cut off, yet the sheer scale of the grounds makes it feel wonderfully self-contained.
Golf is very much the heartbeat of the place. The Links, sculpted into a windswept dune-style terrain, is the headline act. But the resort also has two further Gary Player-designed championship courses, Montagu and Outeniqua, both of which capture the natural beauty of the region while offering plenty of challenge. For non-golfers, the estate includes four restaurants that range from relaxed Italian at La Cantina to the more polished Henry White’s, where local South African flavours take centre stage. The accommodation itself splits between the main hotel with 115 rooms and suites, and the far more intimate Manor House, a converted 1859 homestead that offers a boutique alternative.
Fancourt is best suited to dedicated golfers who want a multi-course destination, though the dining options and setting mean couples and families will find plenty to enjoy too. The atmosphere is smart casual, and the estate is large enough that you never feel crowded. A confident, established resort that earns its reputation without shouting about it.
