Leeu House

Leeu House sits in the heart of Franschhoek, that gorgeous valley of Cape Dutch gables and world-class wine, but it does something a little different from the surrounding estates. Rather than a sprawling resort, it is a small country guesthouse with just twelve rooms and one suite, set right on the main street of the village. You can step out of the gates and walk to some of South Africa's best restaurants, art galleries, and boutiques within a few minutes. For guests who want the Franschhoek wine experience without feeling marooned in the countryside, this is an excellent base.

The interiors are a contemporary take on Cape Dutch heritage, with calm, neutral, multi-textured finishes. Properly good contemporary artworks and sculptures are scattered throughout, which gives the place a thoughtful, collected feel rather than a generic luxury look. The 15-metre swimming pool and landscaped gardens are a peaceful retreat after a day tasting wines or exploring the valley. Guests can also use the facilities at sister properties Leeu Estates and Le Quartier Francais, which effectively broadens the experience beyond the small footprint of the main house.

Leeu House is adults only (eighteen and over), which suits couples and solo travellers looking for quiet and refinement. It is less suited to families wanting kids' clubs or big resort amenities. If you want Franschhoek's vibrant food and wine scene on your doorstep with a calm, stylish place to return to at the end of the day, this is a lovely choice.
