Furaveri Maldives
Raa AtollOur Opinion of Furaveri Maldives
Opened in 2017, Furaveri is a Maldivian-owned and managed, 23-hectare island resort located in Raa Atoll, reached by seaplane or by domestic flight followed by a speedboat transfer. Seaplane is the recommended option, and the resort benefits from its own dedicated lounge at the seaplane terminal.
At opening, and during our first visit, Furaveri’s villa inventory totalled 107 private villas. This has since increased to 169 following the development of a previously unused southern area of the island, with the addition of new beach and overwater villas, along with several new food and beverage outlets. It was exciting to return and see these developments first-hand.
Beach villas are set within very lush vegetation, while water villas are located in two distinct areas off the island. Some villa categories feature private pools, and all are generously sized for a resort at this price point. Even the lead-in category offers an impressive 110 square metres of living space, increasing to around 200 square metres for certain one-bedroom categories — ample room for most families to share comfortably. For those needing more space, multi-room Residences are also available.
This natural island spans 23 hectares and features dense vegetation, surrounding beaches and its own house reef. Its scale allows for the accommodation, seven (soon to be eight) dining outlets, a main bar and a wide range of facilities without ever feeling overcrowded.
Facilities at Furaveri include a large spa and wellness village, tennis and badminton courts, fitness centre, kids club, beauty salon, boutique, PADI dive centre, and a main swimming pool with a separate children’s pool. A regular buggy service operates around the island, with several buggy stops along the route. Alternatively, guests can hire bicycles for a daily fee.
The heartbeat of the island is the main restaurant, pool, beach and bar area, which offers a lively, social atmosphere. The main bar is particularly spacious, with ample seating both indoors and outdoors, as well as a large interior space complete with stage and dancefloor for evening entertainment.
Dining options are nicely varied. In addition to the main buffet restaurant, Jaafaiy — which itself offers an extensive selection to suit all tastes — guests can enjoy Asian fusion and teppanyaki at Raiyvilla, Mexican cuisine at Amigos, vegetarian Indian dishes at Ocean Spice, Mediterranean-inspired fare at Olives & Vines, and seafood and grill specialities at Aqua. A new Lebanese restaurant, located at the end of the arrival jetty, is due to open shortly and will serve Lebanese and other Middle Eastern dishes.
The house reef is best accessed along the northern side of the island, either directly from the beach or from the Ocean Villa Horizons (or public steps) on the north-west jetty. The channel near the watersports centre is particularly good and clearly marked. We were pleased to see a healthy amount of marine life, including baby and adult reef sharks, turtles and an eagle ray. Snorkelling equipment is complimentary for all guests.
Furaveri’s strength lies in its four-star-plus positioning, allowing it to avoid the saturated entry-level five-star segment and instead focus on what truly matters: a natural island setting, authenticity and value. Spacious villas, varied dining options, decent facilities, attentive and friendly staff, flexible meal plans and good snorkelling combine to create a resort that impresses at its price point.
For travellers seeking a Maldivian experience without the premium price tag, Furaveri stands out as an easy recommendation.
