Our Opinion of The Manta Resort
The Manta Resort occupies the northwestern tip of Pemba Island, a less-visited corner of the Zanzibar archipelago that feels genuinely remote. The journey involves a domestic flight to Pemba airport followed by a 90-minute drive, but the isolation is precisely the point. The diving in the Pemba Channel is exceptional, with clear blue water, dramatic dropoffs and shallow reefs teeming with marine life.
Accommodation blends traditional Pemban decor with contemporary comfort. All rooms and villas have king-sized beds, ensuite bathrooms and either a private garden or balcony. The Seafront Villas and Oceanview Villas add a private plunge pool. The resort runs on an all-inclusive basis covering breakfast, lunch and dinner, all drinks including a wide selection of cocktails, wines and beers, and use of snorkelling equipment.
The famous Underwater Room deserves its reputation: a three-level floating island anchored 250 metres offshore, reached by a two-minute boat ride. The main level has a lounge, kitchen and bathroom, the rooftop offers sunbeds for daytime or stargazing, and the bedroom sits below the waterline with almost 360 degrees of glass.
