Amilla Maldives
Baa AtollOur Opinion of Amilla
Amilla Maldives is a standout luxury resort that blends striking contemporary design with the natural beauty of the Maldives. Nature, sustainability and inclusivity sit firmly at its heart. Located within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, the resort offers a refreshing and distinctive take on Maldivian luxury, making it an appealing choice for a wide range of travellers.
From the moment of arrival, the contrast between the resort’s bold, modern aesthetic and its lush tropical surroundings is striking. The island is beautifully green, with winding jungle paths, dense vegetation and a vibrant house reef encircling it — ideal for snorkelling enthusiasts. The villas’ minimalist design, defined by clean lines and geometric shapes, feels fresh and contemporary. While the architectural style may not appeal to everyone, there is no denying the scale and smart layout of the interiors, which are among the most spacious in the Maldives.
Accommodation options are diverse and thoughtfully planned, catering equally well to couples, families and larger groups. Villas start at an impressive 100sqm of interior space and increase all the way to a sprawling eight-bedroom residence. Space and privacy are never compromised.
Our personal favourites are the Reef Water Pool Villas, positioned on the jetty closest to the house reef. Stepping directly from your deck into the water and snorkelling along the dramatic drop-off is a truly memorable experience. For something more unusual, the Tree Top Villas — with their suspended pools nestled within the jungle canopy — offer a completely different perspective of island living.
Dining is another strength. Breakfast at Fresh combines à la carte and buffet options in a relaxed indoor-outdoor setting. Tessera delivers excellent Greek and Mediterranean flavours for lunch, while Emperor Beach Club offers a chic, social beachside atmosphere. Joe’s Pizza is a welcome all-day casual option. In the evening, East serves standout dishes such as the fish tikka, while the signature overwater restaurant Feeling Koi impresses with beautifully prepared sushi and sashimi. Wine enthusiasts should not miss a tasting at The Cellar Door, where knowledgeable sommeliers guide guests through a superb selection.
Meal plans range from Bed & Breakfast to Full Board. While there is no longer a traditional all-inclusive package, Amilla now offers optional non-alcoholic or premium drinks packages that can be added to any meal plan, allowing guests to tailor their stay. Particularly impressive are the extensive dietary menus, which thoughtfully cater to vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, keto and paleo preferences.
Service is seamless and personalised, led by experienced General Manager Morgan and supported by dedicated Katheebs (villa hosts) assigned to each residence. Their attentive yet unobtrusive approach ensures that every detail is handled with care.
Facilities are extensive and well curated. The spa provides a tranquil sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation, while fitness-focused guests can make use of the indoor and jungle gyms, tennis courts and water sports centre. Families are well looked after with a comprehensive kids’ club, and the Dive Butler centre provides access to the exceptional marine life of Baa Atoll, including nearby Hanifaru Bay.
The house reef is undoubtedly one of Amilla’s greatest assets. Coral gardens on the sunset side teem with marine life, while the sunrise side features a dramatic drop-off that will delight confident snorkellers. Whether exploring independently or with guidance, the reef offers a rich and rewarding underwater experience.
Sustainability is not a marketing afterthought here but a genuine commitment. Much of the produce served in the restaurants is grown on the island in its organic gardens — from herbs and vegetables to tropical fruits — reducing food miles and enhancing freshness while connecting guests more closely to their surroundings.
The island is also rich in wildlife, with maakanaa (herons), Maldivian water hens, fruit bats and chameleons frequently spotted. Most special of all is the white-tailed tropic bird, an endangered and protected species for which Amilla is one of only three known resort nesting sites in the Maldives. Amilla took the lead in initiating and spearheading the research and conservation of this species over five years ago, proactively seeking and securing backing from the Maldivian government to support ongoing monitoring and protection efforts. We highly recommend joining the guided Tropic Bird walk with the resident marine biologist to learn more about these elegant birds and observe their nesting areas first-hand.
Amilla’s broad appeal is one of its defining strengths. It suits couples seeking privacy, families wanting space and activities, and groups of friends looking for both relaxation and adventure. The resort achieves an impressive balance between barefoot luxury and purposeful environmental stewardship — truly living up to its ethos of being “In Harmony With Purpose.”
