W Maldives reopened following a comprehensive refurbishment in 2025, and our recent return visit confirmed that this remains one of the most distinctive and energetic resorts in the Maldives.


Set in North Ari Atoll and reached by a scenic seaplane flight, W retains its reputation as a stylish “luxury playground” — but with a more refined edge than in previous years. The villas have been completely refreshed, now presenting a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic while maintaining the brand’s confident personality. With just 75 villas (25 on the beach), all featuring private pools, the island retains an intimate feel despite its vibrant atmosphere. Even the lead-in categories are generously proportioned, and the overwater villas in particular feel fresh and well designed.

The arrival experience was warm and seamless, and we were particularly impressed with the attentiveness of the team. W’s “Whatever, Whenever” philosophy continues to underpin the guest experience, supported by an efficient WhatsApp-based concierge service. Throughout our stay, senior management were visible and engaged — a reassuring sign of strong leadership on island.

One of W Maldives’ standout strengths is undoubtedly its house reef, which we consider to be among the best in Ari Atoll. Access is easy via marked channels directly from the beach, with coral beginning remarkably close to shore and a dramatic drop-off beyond. During our snorkel we encountered turtles, reef sharks, trevally and an impressive variety of reef fish. For keen snorkellers, this is a major selling point and a genuine highlight of the resort.

Dining is varied, with four à la carte outlets and two bars. FISH remains the signature overwater restaurant, with beautifully presented seafood dishes, while FIRE offers a more relaxed grill concept. SIP continues to be the social heart of the island at sunset — and home to the clarified Angelfish Cocktail — with panoramic views and an elevated mixology programme. Kitchen provides the main dining venue and a lively atmosphere, and the option to order from different menus across outlets adds flexibility to the experience.

The island’s central area — incorporating the lounge, Wet Deck and main restaurant — has a contemporary, energetic feel, reinforced by W’s signature soundtrack subtly woven throughout the pathways and social spaces. The iconic metallic “stiletto” waterslide at the main pool remains a playful and uniquely W feature, while thoughtful touches such as complimentary “fuel stops” with chilled drinks and towels dotted along the pathways are a nice addition.

Facilities include the AWAY Spa (currently undergoing further enhancement), a well-equipped fitness centre, watersports centre and resident marine biologist. The resort’s compact footprint makes everything easily accessible while maintaining lush tropical planting throughout.

W Maldives will particularly appeal to couples and sociable travellers in their 30s to 50s who enjoy a design-led environment, strong reef access and a vibrant yet boutique setting. It offers a different energy from more understated competitors such as Park Hyatt or Baros — and for the right client, that confident, contemporary character is precisely the appeal.
