Milaidhoo Island, a luxury resort concept from the esteemed Universal Resorts, continues to solidify its reputation as one of the Maldives’ most enchanting retreats.
From the moment you arrive at this lush, manicured island and receive a warm welcome accompanied by a glass of Champagne from your butler, a tone of understated elegance and hospitality is set for an unforgettable stay.
The villas, as ever, are a triumph: spacious, airy, organically curved and impeccably maintained. Those on the island blend indoor-outdoor living with expansive double-aspect folding doors, and seamless flow to the deck, generous private pool and beach. Foliage introduced to the water villa jetties has now matured and offers a pleasing natural fragmentation to the monochrome structures.
While most villas are largely unchanged since opening, the enormous Ocean Residence has been transformed into a breathtaking 2-bedroom villa, adding an enticing option for families or groups seeking unparalleled space and luxury.
Dining continues to impress at Milaidhoo with its diverse, high-quality offerings. Breakfast at Ocean restaurant is a daily joy, particularly the Maldivian breakfast—a flavourful nod to local cuisine. The Shoreline Grill offers delectable seafood with a feet-in-the-sand dining experience, along with an entertaining Teppanyaki Chef’s Table and refined tastings with fine wine pairings in the Wine Room. The signature Ba’theli restaurant remains a must-visit, blending Spice Route-inspired precision gourmet dishes in a magical overwater setting, where nurse and blacktip sharks glide beneath the decks at sunset.
For a light lunch, the Compass Bar delights guests with offerings such as the standout ‘Impossible Chilli Tacos,’ a must-try for plant-based diners, and don’t miss Lucky’s excellent rendition of the Angelfish Cocktail, available complimentary for Angelfish guests.
A short paddle from Milaidhoo’s beautiful sunrise shoreline leads to the island’s vibrant house reef, which remains in good condition. Snorkelling here is an absolute delight; easy access via the channels reveals a kaleidoscope of tropical fish along with larger marine species such as turtles and reef sharks. The lack of motorised water sports leaves the reef, its inhabitants and its observers undisturbed.
On an island of just 50 villas, other facilities are proportional. The resort’s charming overwater spa may be modest in size and lacking in overt glitz compared to some competitors, but its outstanding treatments—especially the signature massage—more than make up for it. Meanwhile, the small gym, with its glorious tropical views over the lagoon, is rarely busy and offers all the essentials for keeping active.

Milaidhoo Island Summary
Milaidhoo Island is a boutique private island resort in Baa Atoll, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve close to the famous Hanifaru Bay. It is reached by a 35-minute seaplane ride from Velana International Airport and opened in November 2016. Designed by Maldivian architect Mohamed Shafeeq, the island is a compact 5.4 hectares of white sand and lush vegetation, built with local materials and craftsmanship to offer natural, island-inspired comfort with a contemporary touch.
All villas open up 180 degrees to nature, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor living, and feature en suite bathrooms with a soaking tub and separate rain shower, private wine fridges, hanging Maldivian swings, large daybeds, sun loungers, Acqua di Parma toiletries and a 24/7 Island Host service with unpacking and packing.
Children over the age of eight are welcomed.
The 5-star PADI dive centre caters to everyone from novices to experienced divers. The lively house reef offers easy snorkelling access from the beach, with a resident marine biologist, a coral restoration programme and seasonal manta ray and whale shark encounters. Guests can also join fishing trips and dolphin cruises, try non-motorised water sports, take traditional dhoni cruises or yacht cruises, and visit a nearby local island.

The 29 Water Pool Villas stand on stilts over the ocean, with private freshwater infinity pools and direct reef access, while the 18 Beach Pool Villas sit directly on the sand amongst the palm trees. How do you get to Milaidhoo Island?
Milaidhoo is reached by either a 35-minute seaplane flight from Velana International Airport in Male, or a 15-minute domestic flight followed by a 15-minute speedboat transfer.
What meal plans are available at Milaidhoo Island?
The resort offers Half Board and an All Inclusive, called the Gourmet Plan. Half Board includes breakfast and dinner at the main restaurant, Ocean, as well as a credit toward dinner at other restaurants. The Gourmet Plan includes lunch, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and dinner at either Ocean or Shoreline Grill, plus dinners at Ba'theli and Chef's Table (based on length of stay).
Does Milaidhoo Island have a house reef?
Yes, Milaidhoo has a nice reef that is easily accesible from the beach. The drop off is closest towards the South and East parts of the island, where there are channels to swim through. There are a number of guided snorkelling tours and expeditions, including a 'Nemo' house tour, turtle expedition and night snorkelling.
Guests can also support the reef conservation efforts by planting or sponsoring coral trays.
