Kuda Villingili Island Resort Vacation Packages, Maldives
North Male AtollOur Opinion of Kuda Villingili
Kuda Villingili Maldives is a contemporary resort in North Malé Atoll, built around the concept of “Time and Space Redefined”—a philosophy that is immediately evident in both its layout and overall guest experience. Just a 45-minute speedboat journey from Malé, it offers a convenient escape without compromising on space, privacy, or sense of retreat.
The island itself has an interesting history, having once operated as a chicken farm—the origin of the nearby surf break named “Chickens.” Today, it has been thoughtfully transformed into a largely natural island, enhanced with some man-made features that create a distinctive and, at times, slightly stylised aesthetic. While certain design elements may not appeal to everyone, the overall feel is lush and well-maintained, thanks in part to a large and clearly passionate gardening team. The abundance of flowering shrubs and landscaped areas reflects the owner’s personal interest in horticulture, which is evident throughout the island.
Accommodation is generous in both scale and design. Villas are spacious, starting from over 150 sqm, and all feature private pools. We particularly liked the clever use of folding doors, which open up entire walls to create seamless indoor-outdoor living—ideal for making the most of the Maldivian climate. Bathrooms are equally impressive, with bathtubs and basins crafted from crushed and recycled stone, subtly reinforcing the resort’s sustainability credentials.
The island’s centrepiece is its striking 150-metre swimming pool, which runs through the heart of the resort and is one of the largest in the Maldives. Surrounded by daybeds, cabanas and tropical planting, it creates a sociable and visually impressive focal point, complete with
poolside service, showers and facilities that encourage guests to spend extended time here.
Dining is varied and of a good standard, with a strong emphasis on à la carte rather than set menus, allowing for greater flexibility and choice. The resort offers a wide range of cuisines across its outlets, from Mediterranean and Asian to grill and seafood, ensuring broad appeal. While breakfast is well-executed, we would welcome more outdoor seating options to better capture that quintessential Maldivian start to the day.
One of Kuda Villingili’s strongest assets is its proximity to the renowned “Chickens” surf break, located just off the island. The small beach on the southern side acts as a natural gathering point for surfers, and there is a clear energy here during the right conditions. It is also worth noting that a local island is visible from this side and the sunset side—something that did not detract from our experience but is important to highlight for clients seeking complete seclusion.
As there is no house reef, snorkelling is primarily excursion-based—although we were pleased to see baby sharks frequently patrolling the lagoon at the water’s edge. This is, however, handled exceptionally well. The resort’s snorkelling trips are a real highlight, with a highly professional crew providing clear briefings and attentive guidance both before and during the experience. Within around 35 minutes, guests are taken to extensive reef systems offering excellent marine life and long, rewarding snorkel routes.
Facilities are comprehensive, with a spa, gym, watersports, tennis and padel courts, as well as a kids’ club, which is due to undergo further expansion. The resort caters well to both couples and families, with plenty of space to spread out and a variety of activities on offer.
A key part of the resort’s success lies in its leadership. The General Manager is a visible and highly engaged presence, with a clear passion for both the guest
experience and the wellbeing of her team. Her hands-on approach—from supporting the development of the organic garden to fostering strong staff relationships—creates a positive and genuine atmosphere that filters through the entire resort.
Kuda Villingili offers a modern and spacious take on the Maldives, with broad appeal across couples, families and groups. While its aesthetic and proximity to a local island may not suit purists seeking a completely untouched feel, it delivers strongly on space, facilities and accessibility. For those who value convenience, variety and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere—particularly with access to one of the Maldives’ best-known surf breaks—it is a compelling and well-rounded option.
