Our Opinion of The Silo Hotel

The most recent Angelfish visitors to The Silo Hotel were Dan & Jo.
The Silo Hotel occupies the top six floors of the historic grain silo complex at the V&A Waterfront, sitting directly above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa. It is an extraordinary piece of adaptive architecture, and the building itself sets the tone before you even step inside. The industrial origins remain visible everywhere, softened by exceptional design and natural light pouring through the sculpted glass windows that have become the hotel's signature.

The rooms are generous and unusually shaped, a direct consequence of fitting a hotel into a former industrial structure, and each one feels individual rather than pulled from a template. Many have views across Table Mountain or the harbour, and the bathrooms are particularly well done. The rooftop pool is small but perfectly positioned for afternoon sun and a drink while looking out over the Waterfront, and the spa offers a proper escape from the city buzz just below. Afternoon tea here has become something of an institution, and for good reason, the setting is spectacular.

What really sets the Silo apart, though, is the art. The hotel's private collection runs to over three hundred pieces of contemporary African art, displayed throughout the public spaces and corridors. For anyone with even a passing interest in the subject, this alone makes a stay worthwhile. The hotel also offers guided tours of the collection, which are well worth booking.

This is a hotel for design and art lovers who want to be in the thick of the V&A Waterfront action. It is bold, distinctive, and intentionally not to every taste. If you prefer something quieter or more traditional, the neighbouring Queen Victoria Hotel or the Cape Grace might suit better. But if you want a stay that feels like an experience in itself, the Silo delivers on that promise with real conviction.

The Silo Hotel Summary

The Silo Hotel is located in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above Zeitz Museum Of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). The Silo is located in the heart of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, and is the ideal base from which to explore all that the city has to offer.

At the hotel itself, guests can relax at the spa, take afternoon tea overlooking Table Mountain, swim in the rooftop pool, work off the city’s fine dining in the gym or enjoy a guided tour of the hotel’s private art collection containing over 300 pieces of contemporary African art.
