Adaaran Select Meedhupparu Raa atoll

Our Opinion
The only resort in Raa atoll when it opened around 20 years ago, Adaaran Select Meedhupparu now has many new neighbours in what looks set to become a busy atoll, which perhaps prompted this long-established resort to make some enhancements to its offering. Extensive refurbishment work took place in Summer 2019 as part of a longer-term project, which involved upgrades to some of the 211 villa interiors and the introduction of some new villa categories within the existing structure. In addition, Meedhupparu has recently re-launched itself as a Premium All Inclusive product at the 4-star level, with an extensive drinks package (including 19 different wines and a good selection of branded spirits) and the option to dine-around in all four food outlets, two of which are a la carte.
The vegetation is lush throughout the island and all of the semi-detached accommodation is arranged in crescents facing the shoreline, with the trees and bushes providing a welcome canopy of dappled shade before the beach. Beautiful, manicured, tropical gardens, which are accessible to all guests, are located next to the exclusive water villa section towards the eastern tip of the island.
The Beach Villas that have already been refurbished are now classified as Deluxe Beach Villas, with the bed facing the ocean and a simple, yet warming décor. The resort also has some interconnecting units which are perfect for families with children or friends travelling together. A small kids club near reception will surely be of interest to parents who are divers and snorkellers.
Guests have a choice of four restaurants and bars as part of the new dine-around concept. The main buffet restaurant Jaafaiy is very large and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sufura restaurant next door was previously a second main restaurant, usually frequented by repeater guests, however now it is open for lunch and dinner and specialises in authentic Indian cuisine - we highly recommend the reef fish curry. Thavaa restaurant (Mediterranean inspired cuisine) and Café Mass (pizzeria and street food) sit next to each other on the south side of the island. Thavaa is open for lunch and dinner, while Café Mass serves food all day and has a 24-hour bar – a tuna wrap here is great for a well-needed snack after a long snorkel!
The house reef is easily accessible from many points on the island. Many choose the quick route from the arrival jetty on the north side where the steps take you directly onto the drop-off. On a snorkel from the area in front of the main pool we were fortunate to see a turtle, black tip shark, moray eel, squid and a vast amount of fish. Snorkelling gear is complimentary but must be returned at the end of each day for proper cleaning.
If you’re looking for affordable, traditional-style comfort, enjoyable snorkelling, lush natural vegetation, a decent AI package and a healthy dose of 'chill factor' then in our opinion Meedhupparu is terrific value. A large number of long-time, multiple repeaters to the island definitely agree!
