Atlantis The Royal
Our Opinion of Atlantis The Royal
Atlantis The Royal is the newer, brasher sibling next door to the original Atlantis, and it pushes the concept further in every direction. Rising 43 storeys above the Palm, it blends a sleek city-hotel aesthetic with the blues of the Arabian Sea. This is not a resort that pretends to be low key. It is designed for drama, from the moment you walk through a lobby anchored by the world's largest jellyfish tank to the 90-metre sky pool suspended high above the property.
With 795 rooms and 102 suites, it is more compact than its neighbour, but the focus here is on elevated design and exclusivity. 44 of the suites have their own infinity pools, and every room has a view of either the Palm or the sea. The dining line-up is extraordinary, with 17 restaurants, eight of them run by celebrity chefs. The wellness centre spans 5,000 square metres, and the private beach is well tended and less crowded than you might expect given the hotel's scale.
The Royal does not include complimentary waterpark access like the original Atlantis, but it does have its own set of dramatic pools, including the aforementioned sky pool, which is strictly for adults and requires reservations.
This resort is best for couples and groups who want a glamorous, see-and-be-seen Dubai experience with first-rate dining and design. It is less suited to families with young children, who will be better served by the original Atlantis next door with its direct waterpark access and children's clubs. For those who want the Palm address with a more polished, adult-oriented feel, the Royal delivers in spades.
