Angelfish

One of the most iconic reef fish, found commonly in the Maldives, are the Angelfish (Pomacanthidae).

There are a variety of species, with two of the most recognisable being the Emerpor Angelfish and the Regal Angelfish. Both are usually spotted individually and can be quite shy, seeking sanctuary behind coral if you get too close.

The Emperor has darkening lateral blue and yellow stripes, an orange tail, and appears to have a dark eye mask over a white face. The Regal is even more colourful, with vertical orange, dark blue and white stripes, an orange face and purple and yellow fins.

Juveniles can be remarkably different in appearance, with the young Emperor, for example, sporting white and dark & light blue rings.

Other species of Angelfish to keep an eye out for while snorkelling in the Maldives are Blue-Faced Angelfish, Threespot Angelfish, White-Tail Angelfish and Many-Spined Angelfish.
