Denis Private Island Summary
Denis Island is a coralline island located approximately 95 kilometres north of Mahé in the Seychelles, just three degrees south of the equator. Positioned at the edge of the Seychelles Bank, the surrounding seabed drops dramatically by around 2,000 metres into the deep waters of the Indian Ocean. The island is largely protected by coral reefs, which form a natural lagoon and create the island’s striking white sandy beaches that extend almost continuously around its shoreline.
The island is named after Denis de Torbriand, who arrived there in 1773 aboard the French vessel L’Etoile. Early accounts describe the island as being abundant with wildlife, including large populations of seabirds, giant tortoises, turtles, and “sea cows,” a species that has since become extinct. According to historical records, a bottle containing the Act of Possession—claiming the island in the name of the King of France—was buried somewhere on the island, a historical artifact that has yet to be discovered.
Crescent-shaped and fertile due to centuries of accumulated guano deposits, Denis Island covers an area of approximately 375 acres. The island measures around 1,300 metres at its longest point and 1,750 metres at its widest, making it possible to walk around the entire island in roughly two hours. Today, Denis Private Island operates as an exclusive resort that emphasises privacy, sustainability, and a close connection to the island’s natural environment, accessible via a 30-minute light aircraft flight from Mahé.
The bar and lounge area is open from mid-morning, serving drinks and cocktails in a relaxed social setting.
On land, guests can take part in a variety of relaxed activities including island tours, tennis, and cycling. Denis Island also features a cosy library where visitors can enjoy a selection of books and games. This space also provides the island’s only access to television and internet.
There are nine coral dive sites surrounding the island, with depths ranging from approximately 5 to 35 metres. Diving equipment and guidance are available through the island’s PADI-affiliated dive centre.
All fishing activities are conducted in accordance with the island’s conservation guidelines. The boathouse follows the International Game Fishing Association’s tag-and-release programme to support sustainable fishing practices and protect marine populations. Half-day fishing charters are available for guests on request.
